Misconceptions over Split Conference

lt has come to our attention that various organizations have been invited to a conference ostensibly about „rebuilding the IWA” that is to be held in November in Spain. Due to the fact that this has caused some confusion as to the nature of said conference and to avoid any misunderstandings, we would like to clarify a few matters.

The Congress of the lnternational Workers' Association is to be held at the beginning of December in Poland. This Congress and only this Congress is where decisions about the proposals submitted to the Association can be made by the entirety of its member Sections.

The conference being held in Spain, to which some organizations were invited, is not organized by the IWA, although it claims to be a „conference for the preparation of the IWA refoundation”. This initiative is thus a split where outside organizations are being invited to decide over the future of a federation to which they do not belong. It is held against the statutes, agreements and principles of the very federation it claims to be refounding and its aim is to exclude a dozen other member Sections from the process.

No Domination, No Authority; We struggle for more on May Day

Traditionally on May Day, workers of the world receive best wishes in the struggle from organizations all over the world. Many of them will remind them of the struggle for the 8-hour day, which led to the tragic events of 1886. This May Day, besides revolutionary greetings, we'd like to begin with a few words about what else the people who lost their lives after the Haymarket incident were fighting for.

The courtroom speeches of the Haymarket martyrs were written down and show us that these were men of ideals that went far beyond just the struggle for better working conditons. Louis Lingg explained that ”Anarchy means no domination or authority of one man over another”.

This idea is very basic to the ideas of anarchism. That all people should be free and equal. But this equality is not the pseudo-equality of the bourgeoise classes, who usually define this word as a equal right to vote for an elected representative. True equality, in our tradition, is expressed by the idea that divisions caused by wealth or access to natural resources need to be destroyed and that restribution take place. That “from each according to their ability, to each according to their need” be the ethic, not the rule of the market or the idea that anybody deserves more due to the fact they were born into a better position. True equality is also the idea that there are no hierarchies, no person or group of people who dominates others. Historically, domination is supported by factors such as inherited wealth, access to resources or living in a larger and dominant group. An anarchist vision wishes to turn this all on its head. Therefore, we do not accept the logic of the bourgeois democracies and we do not accept the current forms of domination that we encounter.

Anarchosyndicalism is an idea which comes from the anarchist tradition. It sees the need for workers' organizations to carry out a class struggle. But it is not limited to this idea. Historically and today, anarchosyndicalism is also the struggle for libertarian communism and a self-managed society which breaks down all hierarchies and is transformed into a society of equals.

On the Extraordinary Congress of USI – Against the Illegitimate Use of the Name IWA

Following the recent Extraordinary Congress of our Italian Section, USI, an article appeared on that organization’s webpage which could be misleading and which forces us to write a clarification. USI is calling for a “refoundation Congress of the IWA”, to be held parallel to the regular IWA Congress in December 2016. Such an event, called outside of the IWA statutory procedures, would have no relation to the International Workers' Association and constitutes an illegitimate use of its name.

In the past, the Italian Section condemned the illegitimate use of the initials IWA (or AIT). Two decades ago, when USI split and the split faction tried to claim the name USI-AIT, the IWA clearly said that only the part of USI which conformed to our principles and which was recognized by the IWA Congress could use the initials of our federation, the IWA (also known by its English and Spanish acronyms, IWA-AIT). Throughout the years, USI has asked the IWA Secretariat and the Sections to defend it against the split faction usurping its name and we have always done this. The reason behind this is natural: only those which belong to the IWA (or IWA-AIT), who are recognized and comply with the statutes and duties of member Sections (ie, paying dues) should use the name. All others only mislead if they claim they are part of this federation they in fact don’t belong to.

Now things look quite different. USI, is calling for a split Congress, to coincide with the legitimate and statutory Congress of the IWA; it is usurping the name of the International Workers' Association and this may mislead other people and organizations. This use of the IWA or AIT initials is just as illegitimate as the use of the initials USI-AIT by the organization that split from it.

Only the Congress of the International Workers’ Association can decide if it would like to hold an Extraordinary Congress and the regular Congresses are established in the statutes. No single organization or faction of organizations can convene a Congress by themselves in accordance with the Statutes of the IWA.

100 Aniversario de la Federación Sindicalista Noruega: 1916 – 2016

La NSF celebró el evento de celebración de su 100 Aniversario el 29 de octubre como apertura del Centenario de la NSF. El evento tuvo lugar en una casa de madera en Grunerløkka, en Oslo y contó con buena asistencia. Se presentaron salutaciones del Secretariado de la AIT (con sede en Polonia) por parte de la Secretaria General, de un compañero de la SF de Manchester y de un compañero de Ørestad LS, que es una organización de Amigos de la AIT. Más tarde, aparecieron nueve trabajadores de una nueva iniciativa de base de trabajadores del transporte, procedentes de grandes terminales de transporte de Oslo y alrededores, e hicieron una salutación a la NSF.

Primero se oyeron los discursos sobre la fundación de la NSF el 28 de diciembre de 1916 y sobre las numerosas acciones directas de los años siguientes. La NSF estuvo asimismo en la avanzadilla de acciones llevadas a cabo por la jornada de 8 horas y comenzó a agitar en pro de la jornada de 6 horas ya desde 1919. Un trabajador de la sanidad/historiador, que está escribiendo dos libros sobre la NSF, habló sobre el desarrollo en Rjukan, una comunidad en la que la NSF contó con 600 afiliados en 1920 y cómo la rama local de la Confederación principal, la LO, cooperó en ocasiones pero la mayoría de las veces socavó a la NSF y sus acciones directas.

Otro discurso fue sobre las actividades de la NSF en los años 20 y 30. La NSF se unió a la AIT en su Congreso fundacional en 1922 y, desde entonces, ha formado parte activa de la misma. La NSF continuó organizando en los años 20 y 30. También contaba con un grupo de mujeres que formó parte activa en los esfuerzos organizativos de la NSF y muchas de sus miembros fueron también arrestadas durante la II Guerra Mundial por trabajo ilegal contra los nazis.

Errores de concepto sobre la Conferencia de Escisión

Ha llegado a nuestra atención el hecho de que varias organizaciones han sido invitadas a una conferencia que trata ostensiblemente sobre “refundar la AIT” y que se celebrará en noviembre en España. Debido a que ello ha causado cierta confusión en cuanto a la naturaleza de la mencionada conferencia y para evitar cualesquiera malentendidos, nos gustaría clarificar unos cuantos temas.

El Congreso de la Asociación Internacional de los Trabajadores se celebrará a principios de diciembre en Polonia. Este Congreso y únicamente este Congreso es el lugar en el que se pueden tomar acuerdos relativos a las propuestas presentadas a la Asociación por parte de la totalidad de sus Secciones miembro.

La Conferencia que tendrá lugar en España, a la que han sido invitadas algunas organizaciones, no está organizada por la AIT aunque afirma ser una “conferencia para la preparación de la refundación de la AIT”. Es iniciativa es, por tanto, una escisión en la que se está invitando a organizaciones de fuera a decidir sobre el futuro de una federación a la que no pertenecen. Se celebra en contra de los estatutos, acuerdos y principios de la propia federación que afirma estar refundando y su propósito es excluir del proceso a una docena de otras Secciones miembro.

Nos referimos a estos hechos ya que ha llegado a nuestra atención que algunos compañeros de todo el mundo pueden no haber sido informados de la naturaleza de la conferencia y crean que se trata simplemente de un evento de “solidaridad”. No obstante, la invitación enviada a estas organizaciones señala claramente que cual es su propósito en su título. Por tanto, aquellos que no son miembros de la Federación de la AIT, considerando realmente los principios básicos, pueden llegar preguntarse cómo es posible que alguien proponga dejar fuera a los Miembros y dar voz a los no miembros.

Ninguna dominación, ninguna autoridad; el Primero de Mayo luchamos por más cosas

Tradicionalmente, el Primero de Mayo, los trabajadores del mundo reciben sus mejores deseos para lucha por parte de organizaciones de todo el planeta. Muchas de ellas les recordarán la lucha por la jornada laboral de 8 horas, que condujo a los trágicos eventos de 1886. Este Primero de Mayo, además de con salutaciones revolucionarias, nos gustaría empezar con unas cuantas palabras sobre las otras cosas por las que luchaban las personas que perdieron sus vidas tras el incidente de Haymarket.

Los discursos del juicio de los mártires de Haymarket fueron puestos por escrito y nos muestran que éstos eran hombres de ideales que fueron mucho más allá de simplemente la lucha por mejorar las condiciones de trabajo. Louis Lingg explicó que “Anarquía significa ninguna dominación y ninguna autoridad de un hombre sobre otro”.

La idea es muy básica para los ideales del anarquismo. Que todo el mundo debería ser libre e igual. Pero esta igualdad no es la pseudo igualdad de las clases burguesas, que normalmente definen esta palabra como un derecho igual de voto a un representante electo. La verdadera igualdad, en nuestra tradición, se expresa por la idea de que las divisiones producidas por la riqueza o el acceso a los recursos naturales han de ser destruidas y debe tener lugar una redistribución. Que “de cada uno según su capacidad, a cada uno según su necesidad” sea la ética, no la ley del mercado o la idea de que alguien merece más por el hecho de haber nacido en mejor posición. Verdadera igualdad es también la idea de que no hay jerarquías, ninguna persona o grupo de personas que domine a otros. Históricamente, la dominación se apoya en factores tales como la riqueza heredada, el acceso a los recursos o vivir en un grupo más amplio y dominante. La visión anarquista aspira a darle la vuelta a todo esto. Por lo tanto, no aceptamos la lógica de las democracias burguesas y no aceptamos las formas actuales de dominación que encontramos.

El anarcosindicalismo es una idea que procede de la tradición anarquista. Contempla la necesidad de que las organizaciones obreras lleven a cabo una lucha de clases. Pero no se limita a esta idea. Históricamente y también hoy día, el anarcosindicalismo es asimismo la lucha por el comunismo libertario y por una sociedad auto gestionada que rompa con todas las jerarquías y se transforme en una sociedad de iguales.
